Located in the center of Stockbridge just a 5 minute walk from the Red Lion Inn yet unseen from the street, the "Chicken House" overlooks the Housatonic River and conservation land beyond, offering a combination of old world charm and history in a modern ambiance. Starting as a humble outbuilding known as the "chicken house" for a prestigious estate, it has been tastefully transformed in 2016-2017 by the architect owner and wife into a spectacular, private getaway with all the modern appliances and conveniences one would expect.
One approaches the cottage down a long winding driveway, through a park-like setting. Upon entering the cottage, a stunning view of the surrounding countryside and the Housatonic River unfolds. Surrounded by landscaped gardens the Chicken House provides stunning views from every window.
The great room where the living, dining and kitchen are located, has a vaulted ceiling that adds to its overall sense of spaciousness. Extra wide sliding doors (16') in the living room open onto a private terrace with a seating and dining area, where one can enjoy the outdoors either in the sun or under the stars. Also on the terrace is a gas grill is located.
In addition to the great room, the two bedrooms each have sitting areas with the same wrap around windows that provide stunning panoramic views of the river and countryside. One bedroom is located on the main floor, while the second is on a lower level. The upper bedroom has a queen bed and the lower has two twin beds, which can also be converted into a king bed. Both bedrooms have modern ensuite baths with spacious, glass enclosed showers, ample storage space and blackout shades for sleeping in each morning.
The house is comfortably furnished yet deliberately spare in a contemporary manner. It has quality linens to ensure your stay is comfortable. The kitchen is equipped with a side-by-side refrigerator, gas range , microwave, dishwasher and garbage disposal, as well as a full complement of utensils to make cooking and dining convenient, easy and stylish. The washing machine and dryer are on the main floor and the house is centrally air conditioned.
Located near the junction of Routes 102 and 7 and in the historic district, it is a 5 minute walk to the stores and restaurants in the charming center of Stockbridge. It is also a 10 minute drive to Lenox, Great Barrington, Lee, and West Stockbridge where there is a variety of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Hiking, biking and kayaking are at your doorstep. Golf and tennis are nearby. Whatever your reason for visiting the Berkshires, whether it be to enjoy the music of Tanglewood, the dance at Jacob’s Pillow, the many museums, mansions or theater, you can get there with ease.
This is a bird watcher’s paradise. Ducks, geese and great blue heron frequent the river with eagles and hawks soaring above it. The yard and surrounding trees are the home for cardinals, bluebirds, and a wide array of other song birds.
